Cognitive Stimulation Therapy
CST is an evidence based structured programme of activities for people with mild to moderate dementia. It focuses on the vital Cognitive skills that help us think, learn, remember, problem solve and communicate.
CST is undertaken in a group with participants sharing experiences which promotes wellbeing and self-esteem and encourages people to maintain their own interests and activities.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines recommend group Cognitive Stimulation Therapy for people living with mild to moderate dementia.
What can you expect from the group?
The group will meet once a week for 14 weeks. Each themed session lasts one hour containing discussion and group activities. Carers are invited to have a tea or coffee whilst their loved ones attend the session and most find that sharing experiences with other carers is a useful and supportive part of the session,
An important aspect is that the group enjoys socialising and sharing their experiences. The groups are relaxed and fun with group members supporting each other. Members are encouraged to join in but nobody is put on the spot. We hope we have given you a taste of how CST works but please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
